The one weekend I truly NEVER want to end is one spent in The Brooklodge & Macreddin Village, Co Wicklow. It is the most gorgeous country hotel nestled in the verdant Wicklow countryside – a mere 1 hour drive from Dublin. I can’t say enough good things about it but I’m going to try. It is perfect for even a one night break which is affordable to many even at this gloomy time of year. Sometimes I can’t decide if I prefer the good or bad weather when I’m there. It’s the perfect place to really get cosy so it can be heavenly in the freezing temperatures or lashing rain. The hotel consists of The Brook Hall wedding venue, Ireland’s only certified organic restaurant and widely famous Strawberry Tree, La Taverna Armento authentic Italian restaurant, Actons Country Pub, The Waterside Lounge and the incredibly tranquil Wells Spa. There are so many options in Macreddin Village to really make the most of your weekend in this wild and organic paradise – definitely a must visit for food enthusiasts, there’s even a fantastic shop on the grounds to stock up on all of the organic produce used.
Brooklodge always have special offers on their website including the current ‘winter warmer’ costing €100 per person for one nights stay, breakfast and an hour treatment in the Wells Spa. I think it is amazing value for what feels like a 5 star plus getaway. If you are really treating yourselves, the 2 story suites will blow you away. I’m a huge fan of the La Taverna Armento Italian restaurant because it is that bit more relaxed yet really romantic. It is attached to the Acton country pub and it’s great to pop in here before or after to enjoy a drink in one of the many snugs. The pizzas in Armento are authentic Italian wood fired pizzas and are divine. My recommendations for starters would definitely be the antipasti misto piatto & the baked prawn skewer with mixed leaves chilli aioli and grilled bread. If it’s pasta and not pizza your after I would go for the fresh pappardelle, beef fillet Strips, gorgonzola cream and spinach. The menu is likely to change very frequently but if you are lucky enough to visit soon these dishes will not disappoint. 3 courses including tea and coffee is €35. The chianti classico red wine was the most perfect compliment to one of the best Italian meals I’ve ever had. The Waterside Lounge is the perfect place to end an evening in Macreddin Village, their cocktails are top class!
The Wells Spa is a huge attraction to the hotel but one thing that really stands out to me is their price range. Any hour treatment is €75, 30 minute treatments €40 and 90 minute treatments just €110! The 1 hour hot stone massage is absolute heaven. Their outdoor rustic hot tub is famous at this stage and is a real treat in all kinds of weather particularly the morning after the night before.
Book this Wicklow wonderland and be rid of those winter blues!
